The unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
OK, so not really. Of course Jesus is my best friend and then my wife. But next is Wikipedia! You’re laughing, I can hear you. That’s ok, my wife makes fun of me for it too. You see, sometimes we sit down at our house in the evening to watch a movie. She pops popcorn, I get the ice cream, we pick the movie on On Demand, and then settle in on the couch with the lights out. Sounds like a great night huh? NOT SO FAST. We forgot one essential element: my computer.
OK, so now I can hear you counseling types telling me why this is detrimental to my health, my family well-being, yada yada. But wait, let me explain…. I’m not checking out…. I’m not disengaging. You see, I can’t watch a movie without having Wikipedia open on my computer. Usually an actor pops up that Beth and I can’t remember from another movie, or some famous line is quoted, or a piece of literature is referenced, or I want to know who wrote the story, or a historical factoid is thrown out…. Whatever the reason, I have this insatiable desire TO KNOW. Others who’ve watched movies with us now do this in their homes! I’ve started a revolution.
This desire for knowledge is something I’ve had for as long as I can remember. My parents and teachers cultivated it along the way. It led me to take all sorts of random classes in college that I finally managed to piece together into a degree. It’s led me to read tons of books. It’s led me to venture into areas I might never have elsewise gone.
So What’s The Point?
Though not everybody may enjoy algebra, random history facts and other tidbits that make me a fountain of somewhat useless knowledge, this desire SHOULD be present in every one of us concerning our relationship with Christ. I know I’m talking to youth workers and I KNOW we all KNOW this. But take a look at Philippians 3:10 again. This quest concerning the knowledge of Christ was the center, the passion of Paul’s life. It consumed him.
Does it consume you? Or are you like the high school student who says, “What’s the point of algebra? I’ll never use this stuff any way.” Is that how you treat your relationship with Christ. You’ve arrived at a certain point, so moving forward isn’t really a priority anymore? I know I’ve been there. God forgive us.
The Bible is our Wikipedia. Just like I set with my pc open ready to search any clue for deeper meaning, we should have our Bibles ready and open to know Christ more in our day to day life. Do you have an unquenchable thirst to know Christ and the power of His resurrection?
